Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner
The Gardiner Foundation Providing Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner to Women’s Shelter in the Bronx Community
The Gardiner Foundation has been serving several shelters in the Bronx in the Wakefield area. HeartShare St. Vincent’s Services operates across every borough of the city. They provide a comprehensive and holistic set of programming for both children and family dealing with a range of trauma related to family separation. The other shelters The Foundation serves are Baychester, which houses 35 young mothers with their children, and Eden, which houses 27 young mothers and their children.
The government helps to place the young mothers and their children in these shelters, but does not provide them with any other basic services. Some of the young mothers are undocumented immigrants who do not qualify for any government assistance, such as food stamps, Medicaid or cash benefits. As such, any donation is imperative in helping provide basic necessities, especially food.
Even more important in getting food donations, especially for Thanksgiving, is the fact that the shelters are old Bronx motels that the government and the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) use to house these families. The facility has no kitchen and only one microwave for the entire facility.
In order to help address this issue, The Gardiner Foundation has been providing hot meals consisting of whole chicken, rice, beans, mixed vegetables and chocolate cookies. The next meal is scheduled for November 5 th , and then a Thanksgiving feast on November 24 th .
