The Giveaway, run by the Gardiner Turkey Foundation and sponsored by Lawyertime.com, was held at St. James Park in the Bronx, NY on Saturday, November 19, 2016, from 8 AM – 12 PM.
More than 750 turkeys and Thanksgiving fixings consisting of stuffing, cranberry sauce, and fresh vegetables were handed out to families in need in the South Bronx so that they could enjoy a hearty Thanksgiving meal.
Dozens of volunteers were on hand this year to help run the event, including the girl’s JV and varsity basketball teams from Oyster Bay High School in Long Island. 193rd Street between Jerome Avenue and Creston Avenue was blocked off to accommodate the more than 1,000 people in attendance.
“Each year, the Gardiner Turkey Giveaway helps more and more families in need,” said Jeff Korek, a partner with Lawyertime.com. “We are blessed and honored to be a part of this each year.”
The Gardiner Foundation was established by Dexter Gardiner in 2006, in memory of six of his family members whose lives were tragically lost in a fatal car accident on the Bronx River Parkway. Dexter built the Foundation upon his family’s legacy of helping others by leading community outreach initiatives, offering educational scholarships, community support, spiritual guidance and burial assistance.
In addition to the Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway, The Gardiner Foundation runs a two-day annual basketball tournament, toy drives, basketball clinics and youth programs.
