Fun-filled Day For The Community Youth At The Gardiner Foundation Basketball Clinic
The Gardiner Foundation held its first basketball clinic for members of the St. James Park (Bronx, NY) youth community on June 25, 2016. Sponsored by Lawyertime.com and Councilman Fernando Cabrera, this free event was a great success.
The lines had formed long before the 10 AM registration opened. The first 100 kids to register received athletic tee-shirts from the clinic, but no child was turned away. More than 150 kids turned out for the event.
The clinic officially started at noon, kicking off with a prayer then introduction of the elite coaches. Some of the many instructors at the clinic include former Chicago Bulls player and Charles “CJ” Jones and Harlem Wizard Star Eric “Broadway” Jones. Giveaways were held throughout the clinic, and participants, divided by age groups, were taught high-level skills to improve their games.
The Gardiner Foundation is well-known for the many events they hold in St. James Park to benefit the community since 2006. They host an annual basketball tournament that feeds more than 3,500 people over a two-day period and gives out college scholarships, backpacks filled with school supplies and electronics to the community youth.
Other events held by the Gardiner Foundation and Lawyertime.com include the Annual Turkey Giveaway- where Thanksgiving meals are given out to 400+ families each year, a toy drive held in December and a Tru Talk mentoring program aimed at using basketball as a tool to keep the youth of the community off the school and encourage them to further their education and give back to the community.
The next event to be held at St. James Park by the Gardiner Foundation and Lawyertime.com will be the 11th Annual Gardiner Memorial Basketball Tournament, held on August 13-14. This free tournament pairs eight of the top streetball teams throughout the country in head-to-head elimination matchups to crown the champion. A youth all-star will game will be held. Food will be served on Saturday and Sunday and giveaways will be handed out both days. In the past, NY Knicks legend John Starks and NBA all-star Ben Gordon have been in attendance.
